Welcome
Mesa Outfitters offers authentic Elk, Mule Deer, and Bear hunts as well as High-Country Trail Riding and Fly Fishing in the monumental western Rocky Mountains. This is a true back country experience catered to provide you the outdoor adventure you've been looking for.
OVERVIEW
Welcome to Mesa Outfitters
As one of the last remaining outfitters in the state to offer authentic, pack-style mountain hunts and tours, Mesa Outfitters invites you to experience the rugged beauty of Colorado’s Western Slope. This is the true edge of the Rocky Mountains—primitive, private, and unfailingly wild. Based out of Whitewater, Colorado, our guides combine decades of backcountry experience earned throughout the West and across North America to deliver the trip of a lifetime.
Unrivaled, Exclusive Territory
We operate as the sole, exclusive outfitter on over 100,000 acres of the historic Grand Mesa—the largest flattop mountain in the world. Our territory encompasses National Forest Service Unit 41, a strictly non-motorized unit accessible only by foot or horseback. Because motorized vehicles are barred, we offer some of the most remote, undisturbed terrain in the state for big game hunting, high-country trail riding, and pristine fly-fishing.
Deeply Rooted Traditions
Our hunting heritage runs incredibly deep. Today, we still pitch our traditional base camp on the exact Grand Mesa site established by the original outfitter over 40 years ago. As our guest, you will enjoy a classic wilderness experience from a comfortable base camp featuring spacious wall tents. With all your camp needs covered, you can focus entirely on what you came for: the hunt, the ride, or the bite on the line.

Elk Hunts
Hunting the Grand Mesa is a trip you will cherish for a lifetime. 2nd and 3rd Rifle elk licenses are Over The Counter. Archery, muzzleloader, and 1st Rifle must be drawn. As one of the last authentic horseback outfitters in Colorado, you will truly get to wind back the hands of time on this elk hunting adventure. You’ll get to experience elk hunting much like our ancestors did. Our established canvas wall tent camps give you the sort of hunting experience you’ve always wanted. These rugged, yet refined hunting camps allow you to capitalize on exactly what you are looking for – A Hunt.
Whether it’s an archery elk rut hunt, muzzle loader, or a fall season rifle hunt, we offer a package that will fit your hunting style. We take pride in the hunting business that we run, and work hard to show you the hunt of a lifetime. Our guides and staff together have years of experience hunting the area, and we take pride in understanding our elk herd and its seasonal movements. We would love the opportunity to take you on your next elk hunting adventure.
Mule Deer Hunts
Mule deer hunting on the Grand Mesa can be an incredible adventure. The Grand Mesa is home to a great population of mule deer, and the MO staff see several trophy class bucks each season. In the state of Colorado, mule deer tags can only be acquired through the draw process, and it typically requires 0-2 preference points. We can help walk you through the draw and application process. Application deadline is typically first of April. There are two rifle seasons to chase big muley bucks, also muzzleloader, but spot and stalk velvet bucks early in the archery season is a bowhunters dream. You can tell that the rut is starting to kick in during the rifle seasons, and it’s not uncommon to see bucks cruising for receptive does. For more information about hunting mule deer or adding it to your elk hunt, please inquire!
Bear Hunts
The Grand Mesa is known for its large population of black bears spread throughout the mountain side. We have seen bears everywhere from 9500’ aspen groves to the pinyon country down at 6000’. They mostly prefer the thick brush country around the creek basins and rivers, making them an ideal spot and stalk hunt. In our particular unit, it’s not uncommon to see color phase bears from cinnamon to dark chocolate. Having a bear tag in your pocket adds great excitement for elk hunters looking to add more thrill to their hunting adventure.
Summer Horseback Rides
Our summer horseback trips were created with the adventurous individuals in mind. With some of the best trail riding stock in the business, you can’t find a better seat to tour the mountains than on the back of a horse. From mountain streams to lakes stocked with fresh trout, this is a trip for everyone. With customizable trips available, you can come for an over-night trail ride, or set up a 4 day back country adventure full of fishing, hiking and horseback riding. Starting in June and wrapping up in early August, these trips can be catered for anyone. Call today to inquire about these summertime adventures.
